Aimee,
This one could be a problem. There are just too many James Murphy(s).
The 1880 census shows a James Murphy aged 50; with wife Anna, aged 45; son Willie, aged 11; and other children John, Bridget, Celia, and Hannah.
I cannot find this James Murphy in the 1900 census.
If "your" James Murphy is the one who died in 1904 then the one in the 1880 census is not the right one, since the James who died in 1904 only came to the U.S. in 1889.
The WPA records do show a James Murphy, born 1834, died 25 Mar 1904. There is also a Debie (Mrs. James) Murphy who died on 1-7-1890 aged 54. If this is "your" James/Deborah then I would think it unlikely that "your" William would have been born in Wapello County since Debie would have been perhaps too old (53) and William would have had to have been born almost as soon as they arrived in the U.S. (1889).
By the way the WPA records list 4 James Murphy's buried in Calvary Cemetery (the Ottumwa Catholic Cemetery). However, there are no Anna Murphys listed.
Do you have some more information that would allow us to separate the James Murphy families?
