MUSSELMAN birth records

MUSSELMAN

I was born in Ottumwa in 1932 at St. Joseph's Hospital. For some reason, the
hospital clerical staff (or the doctor?) did not submit the proper forms to
the county (or whoever keeps track of such things) and there was no birth
certificate issued and my birth record was not recorded. We lived in Keokuk
County about 20 miles from Ottumwa and nobody ever asked for a birth
certificate. When I was a teenager we moved to Ottumwa and the school
required a certificate. I recall the difficulties and traveling around from
one public office to another in order to get a "delayed" birth certificate.
My point is that at that time, the births might not have been properly
recorded. Of course if it was a home birth, that's another problem.
