Wally Wells, Ottumwa, Formerly of Des Moines
Wally R. Wells, 91, of Ottumwa, died January 12, 2012 in Ottumwa.
The son of Richard Earl and Harriett Hasty Wells, he was born June 19, 1920 in Ottumwa. He married M. Kathlene "Kitty" Harper on January 27, 1946. She preceded him in death September of 1999 after 53 years of marriage.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1939, he was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1945. Wally was the 1939 Gold Glove Champion for the State of Iowa. He had worked at John Deere Ottumwa Works, and was a U.S. Postal clerk for 31 years in Des Moines, retiring in 1988. He was a 50 year member of Ottumwa Masonic Lodge #16 A.F. & A.M.
Surviving are a son, Terry R. (Susan) Wells of Des Moines; a daughter, Patty Wells of North Liberty; five grandchildren, Ryan Wells, Sarah (Joe) Hupp, Travis Wells, Jenessa Sloan and Kelsey Heit; six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffery Wells.
Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m., Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. LuEllen Worth officiating. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2012. A Masonic service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.
The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers or plants, contributions be made to the Wally R. Wells Memorial at any U.S. Bank.
