Obituary From “Ottumwa Daily Democrat,” Saturday Morning, December 20, 1884, Page 1:

TRAUL–Died at his residence, one mile east of the city, DANIEL TRAUL, AT 1 o’clock a.m., Dec. 18th in the 81st year of his age.

Mr. Traul was born in Center [sic-should be Centre] county, Pennsylvania, September 12, 1804. In 1829, he removed to Harrison county, Ohio, and removed from thence to Van Buren county, Iowa, and finally to this county in 1843, and took up the claim which constitutes a part of the farm owned by him at the time of his death.

Mr. Traul has been twice married, and has reared a large family of children, four of whom survive him, viz: Thomas, living on a farm on the south side of the river: John in Deadwood, Dakota: Richard, in Washington territory, and Mrs. Elizabeth Underwood, who has resided with and cared for her father for nearly, or quite, twenty years past, and between whom existed the closest filial and paternal affection.

Mr. Traul had always enjoyed good health up to his 78th year being particularly free from those ills incident to new countries. In June,1882, without any premonitory symptoms, he was attacked with apoplectic convulsions from which he never fully rallied. The following May his left side became paralyzed, since which time he has been entirely helpless, his entire illness covering a period of more than two and one-half years.

Mr. Traul was a member of Ottumwa Lodge No. 16, A.F.&A.M. of Clinton Chapter No. 9, R.A.M. and of Malta Commandery No. 31, K.T., and was, during the latter years of his life, a thoroughly devout worshipper at the shrine of Masonry.

The older members of his various lodges have missed and will continue to miss the earnest attention to, and regular attendance on their deliberations of “Uncle Dan,” as he was familiarly called.

His rules in life have been “to be just as well as generous,” and to “owe no man anything.” Adhering to these rules he has, in his long and temperate life, acquired a fair competence.

Funeral will take place from the Episcopal church Sunday, December 21st, at 1:30 p.m., under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity, Rev. A.C. Stilson officiating. Friends of the family invited to attend without other notice.

[Daniel is buried in the Ottumwa Cemetery.]
