Mrs Catherine (Noe) Chitwood was born in Ohio on April 1, 1824. Moving to Peru, Indiana in the year 1830 with her parents when she was a child of about 6 years. Her marriage to Peter Chitwood took place on January 12, 1842. In the spring of 1850 they came west and settled on the old Jonathan Noe farm, located a mile north of Eddyville, in Mahaska county, now known as the F W Lyon place. Mr Chitwood passed on March 20, 1864, and Ms Catherine and other family members moved to Ringold county a short time, before returning local. For several years, after the death of her daughter, Mrs John Townsley, she acted as housekeeper for her son in law and grandson, Lloyd Townsley. Before her death, of October 10, 1910 aged 86 years, she moved to the home of her son, John Chitwood. She was the mother of 7 children, whom but 2 survive. ( John R and Samuel). Preceding her in death were: Jerry, March 1888; Joe, May 1896; Malissa, wf of John Townsley, died August 17, 1898; Mrs Geo Myers, May 23, 1900 and Wm died at 2 years of age. She was the last member of her family, 3 sisters and several brothers preceded her death. Remains were laid to rest in the family plot, Highland Cemetery, Eddyville.
