Military funeral services for Harvey Harrison Lathrop, seaman first class, who died last Saturday in San Diego California, naval hospital, will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Johnson funeral chapel conducted by Chaplain L.I. Booth of the Ottumwa Naval Air station. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery. Pallbearers will be from the local base.
Harvey Harrison Lathrop, 34, seaman first class, former Ottumwa baker, died Saturday at the Naval hospital in San Diego, California. Cause of death has not been learned here. He was employed at the Lowenberg bakery when he enlisted in the Navy, December 9, 1942, two day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. ( actual date was December 7, 1941) He has been of sea duty most of the time since then in the southwest Pacific and was aboard the U.S.S. Elliott when the ship was sunk. The son of Frank and Elsie Lathrop, he was born December 24, 1909 in Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by his father September 20, 1940 and by his mother September 23, 1943. Survivors include two children, Charlene and Bobby: a brother, Ralph L. Lathrop of Madison, Wisconsin and his grandmother, Mrs. Malinda Sales of Ottumwa. The body is being returned to Ottumwa for burial and will be taken to the Johnson funeral chapel.
