H.C. Smith Former Lumberman, Is Dead
Harlan C. Smith, 78, of 1018, North Wapello street, where he made his home with his daughter and son in law, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Levoy, died at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Ottumwa hospital. He was a resident of Ottumwa for 48 years and for many years was associated with his brother, C.Y. Smith in operating the M.B. Hutchinson Lumber Co. The son of the Rev. and Mrs. D. C. Smith, he was born February 20, 1866, at Webster, Iowa, the second of five children. He was married to Miss Nellie Thompson of Fairfield in 1892. She preceded him in death in 1919 and in 1922 he married Orpha J. Moss of Chicago, who survived him. Two daughters from his first marriage also survive. They are Mrs. Pauline Wilson and Mrs. Georgiana Levoy, both of Ottumwa. Also, surviving is a brother, Charles V. Smith of Albia. In addition to his first wife he was preceded in death by his parents, Two brothers, Frank and Chester Smith and a sister, Viola. Mr. Smith was a member of the First Methodist church.
Funeral services will be held at the Lester Jay funeral home at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in charge of the Rev. Theodore Leonard pastor of the First Methodist church. Burial will be in the Ottumwa cemetery.
