Ike Johnston Is Found Dead On Walk

James Lowell (Ike) Johnston, 38, local tavern operator, was found dead in front of his place, the Union Club, 633 West Second street about 8 p.m. Monday. A police squad car was summoned to the spot where Johnston fell suddenly to the sidewalk and patrolman sent the man to Ottumwa hospital in an ambulance. Upon his arrival he was pronounced dead. Coroner Gordon Traul examined the body and reported that Johnston apparently died of natural cause, probably a heart attack. The victim’ home is at 203 ½ West Main street. Johnston was born March 13, 1906 at Blakesburg but had lived practically all his life in Ottumwa. Survivors include his wife, Margaret, a daughter, Diana Jean, his mother, Mrs. Grace Johnston, Ottumwa, a brother Russell Johnston, Davenport, and two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Seaburn, Dubuque, and Mrs. Fred McElroy Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by his father, Bert Johnston in July of 1936, The body was removed to the Johnson funeral chapel pending arrangements. Funeral services for James Lowell (Ike) Johnston, who die at 8 p.m. Monday at 633 West Second street, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday from the Johnson funeral home in charge of the Rev. C.R. Reed. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn cemetery. The following pallbearers will serve: Pat Johns, Donald Ross, Elmer Gillis, Hoff Allender, Russell Herrington and John Warren.
