Willis Newman, 78, Dies Of Car Injuries
Willis R. Newman, 78, of 433 West Second street, died at 6:20 p.m. Thursday at the Ottumwa hospital where he had been taken Tuesday night after being struck by and automobile at the intersection of West Main and Marion streets. Harold E. Walker, 709 South Moore street, driver of the vehicle that struck Newman reported to the police that the elderly man had run into the street and into the front fender of his car. Newman was a brick mason by trade and has followed that vocation for the past 60 years, Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. J.E. Hunt of Centerville, a granddaughter Mrs. A.J. Llewelyn of Bloomfield; two grandsons, Private Harry Hunt, now stationed at Camp Barkley, Texas and Joe Hunt of Rock Island, Illinois, and a sister, Mrs. Mary McConaha of Ottumwa. The body was taken to the Johnson funeral chapel to await arrangements for the funeral. Funeral services for Willis R. Newman of 433 West Second street, who died Thursday at Ottumwa hospital, will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Johnson funeral chapel, conducted by the Rev. E.L. Frost of the Davis Street Christian church. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery. Members of the Bricklayers, Masons and Plasterers, union local No. 9 of Iowa, of which Newman was a charter member, will serve as pallbearers. They are Thomas H. Wells, David A. Farley, William Pester, John L. Wells, Ralph Twedell and Alex Stewart.
