T.W. Bailey Dies; Morrell Executive
Thomas W. Bailey, 57, executive, of John Morrell & Co. and an employee of that firm nearly 20 years, died at 12:15 a.m. today at the St. Joseph hospital. Mr. Bailey became ill a few weeks ago and underwent a major operation. Prior to that he had been in good health., At the time of his death, he was general manager of the savory foods division for the packing concern, having supervision over canned meats, shortening, and dog food departments for all three plants. His home is at 118 West Alta Vista avenue. Mr. Bailey was born January 6, 1887, at Keota, the son of John J. and Jessie Bailey. He finished high school at Washington, Iowa. Before going to the Morrell office to work in the order department in 1918 he had been a district manager for an insurance company. At Morrell’s he rose, step by step, to assistant in the Ottumwa sales department, to manager of the produce department and supervisor of the retail market, and to manager of the canned foods department. He became general manager of the savory foods division when that division was set up in 1935. Mr. Bailey is survived by his wife. Mary; three daughters, Mrs. Edward J. Grier and Miss Elizabeth Bailey of Ottumwa, and Mrs. William A. Hunt of Sioux Falls South Dakota, four grandchildren; two sisters, Kathryn Bailey of Mason City and Mrs. Elizabeth Wilcox of Davenport; and four brothers, Leonard of Davenport, Kenneth of Brooklyn, New York, Cletus and Gerald of Chicago.
Funeral services for Thomas W. Bailey, Morrell executive wo died at 12:15 a.m. Friday at the St. Joseph hospital, were held at 10 a.m. today from the Lester Jay funeral home. The Rev. Richard Paul Graebel, D.D. pastor of the First Presbyterian church, was in charge and burial was in the Ottumwa cemetery. Pallbearers were James K. Kloehr, J. Rowe Hinsey, A.B. Collier, E.L. Leslie, Ralph B. Vernon and Vic Gibbs. Fellow Morrell executives and others here for the services and include; W.B. Henri, H.E. Christiansen, M.P. Cortilet, E.G. Weimer, H.R. Critchley, and Michael von Motzeck, all of Chicago; Harry Fisher, Omaha; Verle Smith, Kansas City; E.F. Paxson and Guy Roberts both of Sioux Falls; C.W. Phipps, Topeka; Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Stilwell, Springfield, Illinois; W.C. Schultz and Ned Cone, both of Waterloo. He was a member of the Rotary Club, the Ottumwa lodge of Elks and the Country Club. Funeral services will be held at Monday at 10 a.m. at the Lester Jay funeral home, in charge of the Rev. Richard Paul Graebel, D.D. pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Interment will be in Ottumwa Cemetery. The casket will be closed at 10 a.m. Monday.
