John Thomas Brady Sr. 76, a lifelong resident of Ottumwa, died at his home, 340 North Marion street, about 2:45 a.m. Sunday. Death followed a heart attack. He was born in Ottumwa, December 2, 1867, the son of the late Patrick and Catherine Brady, and was the eldest of a family of eight daughters and two sons all of whom have preceded him in death. He received his education in the local schools and at the United States Military academy at West Point, New York. Since 1889 Mr. Brady has been continuously engaged in the practice of civil engineering and land surveying throughout this section of the state.
In Public Office
In 1891 he was elected to the office of county surveyor of Wapello county. He served for a time as assistant city engineer of Ottumwa, and then as city engineer from 1897 to 1903, and again from 1907 to 1911, having been elected to that office on the democratic ticket. When Ottumwa adopted the commission form of government Mr. Brady was appointed city engineer by each administration from 1913 to 1925 and was again appointed in 1927. Whether in public office or not, he devoted himself exclusively to the practice of his profession. Mr. Brady has made the preliminary surveys for the purpose of furnishing the architects with necessary information in regard to property lines, grades, etc. for practically every public and private building which has been built in the city of Ottumwa during the past 55 years. On July 19, 1894, he was married in old St. Mary’s church to Rosa E. Mahoney who died October 27, 1928. He is survived by one son John T. Brady Jr. four daughters, Kathryn A. Brady, Rosa C. Brady , Mary Louise Brady and Mrs. Walter E. Smith: by one granddaughter, Rosa C. Smith and by one grandson, John T. Smith all of Ottumwa.
John T. Brady, Sr. Is Called By Death
The body was to be taken to the home at 4:30 p.m. today. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic church, when a solemn requiem high mass will be celebrated by Msgr. J.M. Walsh, V.F. pastor of St. Mary’s assisted by the Rec. J.H. Courtney of Sacred Heart church, Ottumwa as deacon, and the Rev. James A. Brady of Welton, Iowa as sub-deacon. The was will be sung by St. Mary’s junior choir and by Miss Kathryn Glenn. Members of St. Mary’s parish and of General Shields council, Knights of Columbus, will meet at the Brady home Tuesday at 8 p.m. to recite the rosary. Honorary pallbearers will be Merrill C. Gilmore, Dr. M. Bannister, L.A. Gordon, E.A. Herrick, Fred Schafer, Ben Quinn, H.H. Kamerick and Frank P. Hofmann. Active pallbearers will be John Moon, Clarence Glenn, Edward Keefe, Felix Evans, Mike Mier, Cornelius Rater, Martin O’Hara, and Francis Mullin. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.
