Air Station Pilot Dies Near Delta
Lt. Christopher C. Vaughan, 37, Naval aviator attached to the U.S. Naval Air station here, crashed and was instantly killed while on a routine flight north of the station late yesterday. Vaughan whose home was in Camden South Carolina was piloting an SBD (dive bomber) and the plane dug itself deep into the swampy terrain, bordering the Skunk river near Delta. Lieutenant Vaughan reported at this station last July 18, after previous service at the Naval Air station at Anacostia near Washington D.C. He was promoted to his present rank last October 1. Orders are known to have arrived at the station this week which would have sent him to another station for additional training leading to a Navy transport pilot. A board of qualified officers will be appointed to investigate circumstances of the fatal crash. It was the first fatal flying accident our of the local station since last October.
