Funeral Monday For Patrol Sergeant Jennings

Funeral services for Sergeant Herbert W. Jennings of the Ottumwa district, Iowa state highway patrol, who died Friday afternoon in the St. Joseph hospital will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the First Methodist church. The pastor, the Rev. Herbert A. Keck, D.D. and the Rev. Malvin H. Lundeen of the First Lutheran church will be in charge. A ritualistic service by members of the patrol will be given at the church. Masonic services will be held at the grave in Ottumwa, cemetery. The casket will be taken to the church at noon Monday from Johnson’s funeral chapel and will be closed at the beginning of the services. Sergeant Jennings, whose home was at 628 West Fourth street, was the son of Lewis and Etta Jennings and was born at River Sioux, Iowa, May 9, 1905. He was one of the original 50 highway patrolman who began their work in 1935. Jennings was promoted to sergeant of district No. 10 of Ottumwa in 1937 and had served in that capacity ever since. “The best sergeant in the state,” said Captain Claude Shearer of the patrol today. Jennings a member of the state sheriffs’ association and of the state policeman’s association, a member of Empire lodge 269, of the Masons and B.P.O. Elks 347. From 1935 to 1937 he was patrolman stationed at Manchester. Prior to 1935 he had served 11 years with the Northwestern railroad out of Boone, and in 1929 was set up to conductor. He married Violet Cole, November 3, 1926, at Webster City. She survives together with their daughter Shirley Ann, 12 years old. Other survivors are his mother, Mrs. Etta Jennings of Moorhead, Minnesota; a brother Harry of Webster City, and a sister, Mrs. Blanche Lewis of Turin, Iowa. His father preceded him in death in 1907.
Death Comes To Jennings
Sergeant Herbert W. Jennings, 39, above in charge of the Iowa highway patrol in the Ottumwa district, died about 2 p.m. today at the St. Joseph hospital following several years of ill health. Sergeant Jennings was taken to the hospital about 10 days ago for treatment to a heart ailment and a blood infection. He had been patrol director here since that state organization was founded in 1937. Previous to that time he had lived in Manchester.
