Life-Long Resident Of County Is Dead
Mrs. Emma E. Kerns, 73, wife of the late John E. Kerns, died Tuesday afternoon at 12:15 at her home at 1219 Center avenue. Mrs. Kerns was born May 28, 1870, in Wapello county and had lived in this county all her life. She was the daughter of Nathan and Mary Manro and was married to John Edward Kerns November 13, 1888. He preceded her in death September 28, 1940. She is survived by six daughters; Mrs. Agnes Strain of Eddyville, Mrs. Maureen Reed, Mrs. Evelyn McCoy, Mrs. Edith Stansberry, Mrs. Helen Baker and Miss Jeannette Kerns all of Ottumwa.; one son, Leo Kerns of Ottumwa; 17 grandchildren; two brothers, Sam Manro of Tulare, California and George Manro of Denver, Colorado; six sisters, Mrs. Adeline Stark of Chicago, Mrs. Minnie Prosser, Mrs. Katherine Wittenmyer, Mrs. Vina Amoss, Mrs. Berth Marble and Mrs. Maybell Blizzard, all of Ottumwa. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 8:30 at he home and at 9 o’clock a requiem high mass will be celebrated by the Rev. J.H. Courtney at the Sacred Heart Catholic church. Burial will be made in Calvary cemetery. Members of the Altar and Rosary society will meet with members of the Sacred Heart church Thursday evening at 8 o’clock at the Kerns home to recite the rosary. The body will be removed from the Vaughan funeral chapel to the home at 4 o’clock this afternoon.
