Joseph Herber, 54, Local Grocer, Dies
Joseph C. Herber, 54, well known Ottumwa grocer, died suddenly from a heart attack at 4:15 p.m. Sunday while visiting friends at the Central fire station. He had been in the grocery business with his brother, Dave Herber at 101 North Weller street for the past 30 years. He served in the first World War in the coast artillery and was a member of the American Legion. He was born March 7, 1889 at Lucas and came to Ottumwa as a child. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Blanche Herber of 531 Chester avenue and the following children; Regina and William Herber, at home and Joseph Herber, with the Army Air Corps station at Jefferson barracks, Missouri. He is also survived by the following brother and sisters; Dave Herber, Ottumwa; John Herber of Long View, Washington; Sister Mary Matilda, Ottumwa Heights college, and Miss Ann Herber of Davenport. He was preceded in death by his parent one son and one brother.
Funeral services for Joseph Herber, who died suddenly Sunday afternoon, will be held Thursday morning at 8:30 at the home and at 9 o’clock at the St. Patrick’s Catholic church where a requiem high mass will be conducted by the Rev. T.C. Donahue. Burial will be made in Calvary cemetery, O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 of the American legion will hold Military services at the grave. Member of the General Shields council No. 888 of the Knights of Columbus and the members of St. Patrick’s church will meet Wednesday evening at 8 o’clock in the Herber home to recite the rosary. The body will be removed to the home at 3 o’clock this afternoon from the Vaughan funeral chapel.
