Veteran Utilities Employee Dies At 80
John L. Cherry, 80, until his retirement six years ago a veteran employee of the Iowa Southern Utilities Co. and the old Ottumwa Railway & Light Co. died at midnight Sunday at his home, 522 East Finley avenue. He was the son of John and Katherine Cherry and was born at Garden Grove, November 15, 1863. He had been a resident, of Ottumwa 39 years and was an employee of the utilities firms for 35 years. He was a member of Gospel Hall, Ward and Mary Streets. Survivors are his wife, Eva Jane and five sons, Lee Cherry, San Francisco; Captain Glen Cherry of the Army overseas; J.E. and Leonard Cherry of Ottumwa and Corporal John A. Cherry of Camp Sutton, North Carolina. Also, four brothers and a sister, Newton Cherry of Confidence, Iowa, Willis of Portland, Oregon, Walter and Harry, both of California, Mrs. Ellen Pipes of Davenport and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services for John L. Cherry, veteran employee of the Iowa Southern Utilities Co. who died Sunday at his home 522 East Finley avenue, will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Johnson funeral chapel, conducted by A.O. Smith Burial will be in Shaul cemetery. Pallbearers will be Henry Denebrink, Wade McReynolds, Ira Smith, Charles O’Brien, Van Bradford and Lewis Kentner.
