Fred W. Wilson Dies At Age Of 90
Fred W. Wilson, 90, years old and until recently one of the most active men of his age ever known here, died at 3:05 a.m. today at the St. Joseph hospital approaching his 91st birthday less than one month away, Wilson had continued to take long and brisk walks until early fall this year. He was and enthusiastic golf player and only two years ago played in the last formal golf tournament when he entered The Courier’s Southeastern Iowa open tournament. Since then he had played many golf matches with his friends. He was born January 8, 1854 in Philadelphia and came to Ottumwa as a young man. For many years he was employed by the John Morrell & Co. and was associated there with the late T.D. Foster. He later established a wholesale fruit house here which he operated for a number of years. For many years he was active in republican party politics and at one time served as deputy county clerk. After serving as assistant postmaster for some time, Wilson was appointed postmaster here November 23, 1903, and remained in that office for six years. He is survived by one son, Fred D. Wilson of Fort Wayne, Indiana, five grandchildren and by three great grandchildren. Mr. Wilson was a member of the First Presbyterian church. The body is at the Lester Jay funeral home pending completion of funeral arrangements.
Funeral services for Fred W. Wilson who died early Tuesday at the St. Joseph hospital will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from the Lester Jay funeral home. The Rev. R.P. Graebel, D.D. pastor of the First Presbyterian church will have charge of the services and burial will be in Ottumwa cemetery.
