Morrell Foreman Called By Death
Clay Jones, 57, foreman of the fresh meat department at John Morrell & Co. and an employee of that firm for more than 35 years, died suddenly at about 2:30 a.m. today in his room at the Milner hotel. Jones who had worked at Morrell’s late yesterday evening, had left a call for 4:30 this morning. When he failed to answer the call the hotel clerk called police officers, who found Jones dead, presumably from heart failure, when they entered the room. He was born October 15, 1886 in Lee Valley, Tennessee, the son of P.T. and Eliza Jane Jones, and had been a resident of Ottumwa for the past 46 years. He was a brother of Chief of Police Doyle Jones and was a member of both the Elks and the Eagle lodge here. His wife, Mrs. Lillian Jones died in 1928, and he is survived by one son, Master Sergeant Neil R. Jones with the coast artillery overseas; a daughter, Mrs. Ed Simmons of Ottumwa, and one grandson, Terry Simmons of Ottumwa. He is also survived by three other brothers and four sisters; Mont Jones, Ottumwa; Mack Jones, Sam Jones, Miss Fleecy Jones, Miss Bernice Jones and Miss Mary Jones, all of Lee Valley, Tennessee, and Mrs. Kitty Dolen of Kingsport, Tennessee. The body is at the Johnson funeral chapel pending the completion of funeral arrangements.
Funeral services for Clay Jones, a department foreman at John Morrell & Co. who died suddenly earl Thursday at his room in the Milner hotel, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Johnson funeral chapel conducted by the Rev. Thurman Bowen of the Finely Avenue Baptist church. Burial will be in Ottumwa cemetery. Pallbearers will be Earl McCuen, Clarence Reedquist, Francis Mullen, Floyd Stump, Curtis Munden and Clarence Collett.
