John Armbruster, 50, employed in the pickle department at John Morrell & Co. for the past 18 years was killed Friday afternoon when run over by a car at the rear of his home, 1014 East Main, street. Authorities said Armbruster was walking up the alley back of his house, carrying several large pieces of cardboard, when a next-door neighbor, Cornelius E. Ellis, 17, backed his car out of the drive and crushed Armbruster. Although the mishap was accidental, Ellis was taken into police court today and was fined $250 for operating a car without a driver’s license. The victim was taken to Ottumwa hospital but died on route. He was born April 5, 1893, at Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Armbruster. He was a member of the F.O. E. lodge No. 114 and the C.I.O. Survivors include his wife Etta, and four stepsons who are all in the armed services, W.O. Mitchell, Ocracoke, North Carolina, Mitchell in Alaska, Thomas W. Roberts, Bowman Field, Kentucky and Sergeant John E. Roberts in England. The body was removed to the Johnson funeral chapel pending arrangements. After investigating incidents connected with the death, Coroner Gordon Traul reported he saw no need for an inquest.
Funeral services for John Armbruster 50, of 1014 East Main street, fatally injured when struck by a car near his home Friday afternoon, will be held Tuesday afternoon, will be held Tuesday at 3:50 p.m. in the Johnson funeral chapel. The Rev. E.M. Boyer will be in charge and burial will be in the Ottumwa cemetery. The casket was taken to the home Sunday night and will be returned to the funeral chapel at noon Tuesday. Pallbearers will be Dennis Kelter, Don Fisher, James Hunt, Clyde Jones, William Toopes and Guy Eaten.
