Navy Flier Killed Near Oskaloosa
A Naval officer-pilot was killed, and his mechanic seriously burned shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday when their plane, on a routine flight from the U.S. Naval Air station at Ottumwa, crashed near Oskaloosa. Dead in Ensign Robert L. Holsington, 23, of Enid, Oklahoma. His wife Gail is in the St. Joseph hospital where a daughter was born to them only three days ago. Their home here is at 201 North Ward street. In critical condition with major burns is Robert C. Carson, 19, of Logansport, Indiana, an aviation machinists mate third class. Details of the accident involving his training ship, a biplane, were not available. Holsington was commissioned a Navy Officer and flier December 14, 1942, at the Naval Air station at Corpus Christi, Texas. He served at the air stations in Glenview, Illinois and New Orleans before coming here as an instructor May 20, 1943. In addition to his wife and baby he is survived by his parents. His mother is in Ottumwa and the father in en route here from Montana. The body is at the Carroll Reece funeral home. Carson enlisted in the Navy November 16, 1942 and came to Ottumwa station July 31. He is in the station hospital.
