Lester E. Wilkinson, former soldier, shipyards worker and former Ottumwan was burned to death in his bed at his home in Long Beach, California, Tuesday night, according to word received by Ottumwa relatives. Details of the accident are not known but is it believed Wilkinson fell asleep while smoking in bed. His wife, Patricia, who was visiting her parents in Davenport, returned at once to California and will come to Ottumwa with his body. Funeral services and burial will be held here. Wilkinson, 40 years old, was a former soldier. He entered the service after going to work in California, serving about six months in the Army before being discharge because of his age. He left Ottumwa a year and a half ago. Besides the widow, he is survived by a son and by a previous marriage; Jack, living in Ottumwa; his mother, Mrs. Effie Wilkinson of 1010 West Main street, and the following brothers and sisters; Mrs. D.F. Van Winkle, Mrs. Pearl Chadd, Mrs. Myrtle Reed, Mrs. Ellen Gilliand, Roy Wilkinson, Ernest W. Wilkinson and Willie Wilkinson, all of Ottumwa and Clyde of Des Moines.
Funeral services for Lester E. Wilkinson who died August 18 in Long Beach, California, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday from the Lester Jay funeral home. The Rev. Lloyd C. Snyder, pastor of the West End Presbyterian church will be in charge and burial will be in Ottumwa cemetery. Military services were held in California.
