Ottumwan Dies On Railroad Track
Phil H. Monahan, 45, who roomed at 709 Mill street, was found dead on the Milwaukee railroad tracks near the Rock Island freight house at 3 a.m. today. The body was discovered by Ed Pickford who notified police. County Coroner Gordon Traul was summoned and said that the body was badly mangled and had evidently been run over by an engine. Traul added that while there is no way of knowing just how the mishap occurred, it seems evident that it was an accident and that no inquest will be held. Official in the Milwaukee superintendent’s office say their crew have made no report of the accident and were not aware of the death. Monahan is survived by his wife, Mrs. Marjorie B. Monahan, one son Aviation Cadet Cecil P. Monahan of Ellington Field, Texas; his father, Owen Monahan of Mason City, and one brother O.D. Monahan of Waterloo. He was a World War veteran and served with Co. B of the 168th Infantry. He was a member of the Ottumwa chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The body is at the Johnson funeral chapel where funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday. The Veterans of Foreign Wars will have charge of the military portion of the service.
