Crushed To Death Under Lumber Pile
J.E. Perry, Ottumwa route 3, was killed early this afternoon when trapped as the floor fell in at the Baxter Wood Works Co. 515 Church street, crushing him beneath a pile of lumber. Fireman and policeman worked for nearly an hour before releasing the body from under the wood. He was then pronounced dead by City Physician D.L. Rater. Perry who hauls lumber was working in the rear room at the small plant as the floor crashed through to the basement, sending heavy pieces down on top of him. The body was removed to the Johnson funeral chapel awaiting funeral arrangements. Mr. Perry, who was 51 years old, was born March 6, 1893, at Lacoma, Missouri, the son of John and Martha Perry. He moved to Ottumwa in 1918. Survivors include his wife, Ethel, two sons Howard in the Navy and Lester, at home; a daughter, Donna at home; his parents; two brothers, Sam and Clarence Perry, both of Lacoma, Missouri three sisters, Mrs. Hettie Clements, Rolla, Missouri, Mrs. Margaret Marsh, Harvard, Illinois and Mrs. Mamie Stogsdill of Illinois and a granddaughter.
Funeral services for J.E. Perry, Ottumwa route 3, who was killed at the Baxter Wood Works Co. 515 church street will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Seventh Day Adventist church on Ransom street, conducted by Elder Ghackenhamer. Burial will be in Ottumwa cemetery. The body will remain at the Johnson funeral chapel until 10 a.m. Saturday when it will be taken to the residence on route 3. At 11 a.m. Sunday it will be moved to the church where it will remain until services.
