Charles Sauders Dies; Veteran Merchant Police

Charles Sauders who until his retirement two years ago had served for 29 years as an Ottumwa merchant policeman, died Sunday at his home, 126 North Weller street, at 9 a.m. today. He was 72 years old and had been a resident of Ottumwa for upward of 50 years. As a merchant policeman, patrolling a beat from Marion street to Jefferson street and the railroad tracks, Saunders walked and estimated 120,000 miles in the line of duty during his 29 years in that service. He assumed his police duties May 1, 1912, and prior to that time was employed at the old ruffler works, on the Milwaukee railroad, at the J.W. Edgerly Co. and for five years was a member of this city police force. Sauders record of service as a merchant policeman reveal the in 20 years on duty, he was never absent more than two months because of vacations or illness. At one period he patrolled his beat for 13 consecutive years without missing a night. He was born June 10, 1870, in Ohio, the son of Conrad and Catherine Sauders. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic church and of General Shields council No. 888 of the Knights of Columbus. Surviving are his second wife Grace and four stepsons, William H. Thomas, Walter Thomas and Llewellyn Thomas all of Ottumwa and David Thomas of Los Angeles, California. Two brothers William Sauders of Portland, Oregon and Andy Sauder of Ottumwa and three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Schwartz, Mrs. Mayme Burnside and Mrs. Sam Carr, all of Ottumwa, also survive. His first wife Anna preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick’s Catholic church, with the Rev. T.C. Donohoe celebrating requiem high mass. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. Members of the Knights of Columbus will recite the Rosary at Johnson’s funeral chapel at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
