George Woolums, 32, Is Drowned Sunday When Horse Slips
Neighboring farmers and officers from Ottumwa were still searching for the body of George Woolums, 32-year-old dairyman who was drowned Sunday evening in Avery creek at 1 o’clock this afternoon. The mishap occurred at 7:15 p.m. Sunday on the Woolums farm one-mile northeast of Munterville. Woolums was on his way to drive in the cows when the horse he was riding slipped and fell on the bank of the swollen creek. He was thrown into the stream and handicapped by the rubber boots that he was wearing. A helper, also on horseback, but all attempts at rescue failed. Deputy Sheriff Charles Orman and Coroner Gordon Traul went to the scene early today. The stream is being poled for a long distance downstream from the scene of the accident, but due to the speed of the current and the excessive depth of the water, little hope was held out for an early recovery of the body. Woolums is survived by his wife, Mrs. Edna Woolums, and two children, Marlin Woolums and Carolyn Woolums. He is also survived by his father, Fred Woolums of Ottumwa and by four brothers and four sisters, Mrs. Serena Peterson, Mrs. Perletta Moore, Mrs. Doris Hughey, Mrs. Marie Pearson, Versal Woolums, Russell Woolums, Fred Woolums and Frank Woolums all living is this vicinity. George W. Woolums, was 33 years and operated a dairy farm on route 1, Chillicothe. He was a member of the Christiansburg Methodist church, and is survived by his wife, Edna Woolums, a daughter Carolyn Woolums and one son, Marlin Woolums. He is also survived by his father, Fred Woolums of Ottumwa and by four brothers and four sisters; Vireel Woolums, Fred Woolums, Franklin Woolums, Mrs. Serena Peterson, Mrs. Doris Hughey, Mrs. Marie Pierson, all of Ottumwa and Mrs. Perletta Moar of Melbourne, Iowa; He is also survived by one half brother Clem Woolums of Brooklyn, Iowa.
Short funeral services will be held at 2 .m. Thursday from the residence and at 2:30 p.m. from the Christiansburg church. The Rev. J. E.A. Cunningham of Blacksburg will be in charge of the services and burial will be in the Chisman cemetery. The casket will be taken from the Johnson funeral chapel to the residence this evening. The pallbearers will be Charles peters, Arthur Swanson, Arden Bose, Arthur Sweeney, Frank Bender and Russell Smith.
