Death Comes Thursday To Mrs. John H. Morrell
Rites Saturday For Widow Of Former Packing Company President.
Mrs. John H. Morrell, 70, prominent life-long resident of Ottumwa died at 6 p.m. Thursday in the home in which she had lived her entire married life at 418 North Market street. She was the wife of the late John H. Morrell who was president of John Morrell & Co. from 1916 until the time of his death in 1921. Mrs. Morrell was a leader in her many community activities. Her service and counsel were particularly outstanding in her church work. She had been a member of the official board of the First Methodist church for many years, and her leadership there was an important factor in the growth of the church.
Hospital Trustee
She was also a member of the Ottumwa Hospital association board of trustees where again she spent years of valuable service. She was a charter member of the Fortnightly club, a member of P.O.E. and belonged the King’s Daughters. Helen Edgerly Morrell was born November 21, 1872 in Ottumwa, the daughter of John W. and Maria Chambers Edgerly. She received her education in the public schools of Ottumwa and in the Lorine school of Chicago. On April 6, 1899, she was married to John H. Morrell. Two of their three children survive. George A. Morrell, a director and treasurer of the John Morrell & Co. of Ottumwa and Mrs. John Favill of Winnetka, Illinois. The younger son of John E. Morrell preceded her in death. She is also survived by one sister and two brothers, Mrs. J.A. Sunderland, George C. Edgerly and Denison M. Edgerly, all of Omaha. Two brothers and one sister preceded her in death. Dr. E.T. Edgerly for years was a leading physician of Ottumwa. Adine C. Edgerly and John W. Edgerly Jr. who died in his youth. There are four surviving grandchildren. Constance Morrell, John Norman Morrell, Barbara Wells Favill and Elaine Favill.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday from the First Methodist church. The Rev. Herbert Allen Keck D.D. pastor will be in charge of the services and burial will be in Ottumwa cemetery. The casket will remain in the church form 9 o’clock until 10:15 when it will be closed for the services. Pallbearers will be Allen Sharp, Frank Fiedler, Rowe Hinsey, V.A. Gibbs, L.H. Ryan, Ralph Vernon, R.M. Foster and Donald Neasham.
