William E. Welch, Rail Veteran Dies

William E. Welch, 84, above, a veteran retired employee of the Burlington railroad, died at 5:20 a.m. today at the St. Joseph hospital. His home was at 625 North Jefferson street. Mr. Welch, who retired from the Burlington on February 14, 1931, had served as a switchman in the yards at both Chariton and Ottumwa, and had worked for the Burlington for 37 years before his retirement. He was a member of the B. of R.T. and of the First Christian church here. He was born January 7, 1859 at Lucas, the son of Jesse and Mary Welch, but had lived in Ottumwa for the past 40 years. He is survived by three daughters; Mrs. J.R. Walsh, Buffalo, New York; Mrs. R.H. Wood and Mrs. Bertha Harrington, both of Ottumwa. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and by four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Sylvia Welch, who died in 1918, by one son and two sisters. The body is at the Johnson funeral home pending completion of funeral arrangements.
Funeral services for William Eugene Welch of 625 North Jefferson street, who died early Friday at the St. Joseph hospital will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday from the Johnson funeral chapel. The services will be in charge of the Rev. Harold Roberts and burial will be in the Ottumwa cemetery.
