Carl E. Grant, 27, of Ellis avenue, died abut 9 p.m. Saturday of a skull fracture and internal injuries suffered when he was struck by an automobile driven by Wilbur Paxton, 19-year-old Fairfield resident on South Madison avenue near Mary street. Paxton said Grant walked out into the street from between two parked cars. Selective service authorities said Grant was have left December 11, for his physical examination prior to induction in the Army. The death brought to four last week's Iowa highway fatality toll and raised to 373 the year's total, compared to a figure of 565 for a comparable period in 1941.
Sister To Hospital
Paxton was taking his sister to a local hospital for and emergency operation at the time of the mishap. Grant, an employee of the Johnson Lawn Mower Co. Was the son of Jacob and Mamie Grant and was born in Davis county, December 20, 1914. He had been a resident of Ottumwa for 14 years. Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Viola, three sisters, Mrs. Mabel Fiedler, Rock Island, Illinois, Mrs. Dorothy Waddie and Mrs. Helen Culbertson, both of Ottumwa; and two brothers Donald Grant, Sheppard Field, Texas, and Paul Grant, Knoxville, and several nieces and nephews. The body is at the Johnson funeral chapel pending arrangements.
Funeral services for Carl E. Grant, 501 Ellis avenue, who died at the Ottumwa hospital Saturday night following an auto accident, will be held at the Johnson funeral chapel Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in charge of the Rev. Trenton Staton of the Open Bible church. burial will be in Shaul cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Styre, Floyd DeHart, Ernest Moore, Glen Avery, Wilbur Jones, and James Peck.
