Mrs. Ethen Gilbert Dies At Age Of 85
Mrs. Mary Pauline Gilbert, 85, wife of the late Ethen Gilbert died at 9:45 p.m. Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lucille Foxx, 1019 South Sherman street. Mrs. Gilbert was born in Parie, France April 9, 1857, the daughter of John and May Baitl Hoffman. She came to this country in 1871, going to Norfolk Virginia. She and Mr. Gilbert were married at Harper, Iowa, in 1876. They came to Ottumwa in 1896, and lived here since that time. Mr. Gilbert preceded her in death September 12, 1919. Mrs. Gilbert was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church, and of the Altar society of the church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Walter Stellar and Mrs. Foxx, and son, Edwin of Ottumwa; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A son and three daughters preceded her in death. Members of the Altar society will meet at the Carroll Reece funeral home at 8 tonight to recite the rosary. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's church, with burial in the Calvary cemetery. Pallbearers will be Emery Carl, Charles Bearicks, John Peden Owen Courtney, Lew Gray and Thomas Gee.
