Mrs. Hanna Gossett Roberts wife of the late Judge M.A. Roberts, died at 8 p.m. Saturday at the home of her son, Newton W. Roberts, 423 North Market street. She had been in poor health for many months, and critically ill for a month. Mrs. Roberts was born in Hancock county Indiana, January 30, 1855. She was the daughter of the Rev. Thomas Gossett, a Methodist minister, and Elizabeth Gossett. The early years of her life were spent in and near Indianapolis. She and M.A. Roberts were married in Indianapolis March 4, 1878. Soon after their marriage the young couple decided upon moving westward. The picked Ottumwa by name, from a map. In 1883 she moved with her husband who established his law practice which led him to a judgeship and to wide recognition in Iowa. She immediately affiliated with the First Methodist church and remained her membership until her death. Mrs. Roberts was active in church work and in church circles until recent years. She was also a faithful member of the Ottumwa hospital auxiliary for many years, and headed the sewing committee when that was an important part of the hospital auxiliary work. Judge Roberts preceded her in death June 17, 1938. A son, Franklin T. and a daughter, Emma Lou Weber, also preceded her in death. Surviving are her son Newton, a grandson, Franklin, of Houston, Texas and a granddaughter, Betty Roberts Edwards of Meridian Mississippi. Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist church at 2 p.m. Tuesday (last two lines of obit cut off.)
