Engineer Victim Of Heart Attack
Roy C. Oakes Succumbs In Kansas City; Was Ready To Bring Limited North.
Roy C. Oakes 62, Milwaukee railroad engineer, died suddenly of coronary sclerosis, a heart disease, Saturday about 4 p.m. as he ate lunch in a Kansas City hotel annex. Mr. Oakes' home was at 713 West Second street. He entered the Milwaukee service as a fireman August 15, 1898 and was promoted to engineer July 20, 1903 and had served in that capacity since. For more than 30 years he had lived in Ottumwa. Mr. Oakes was chief engineer of Division 538, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers at the time of his death. He also was a member of Empire lodge, No. 269 A.F. & A.M. and Clinton chapter No. 9 Royal Arch Masons. He was born March 8, 1876 at Waukau, Wisconsin. Surviving are his wife; a son Max at home; a brother Charles of Shiocton, Wisconsin; a sister Mrs. Jennie Johnston of Racine, Wisconsin and 13 nieces and nephews. Joe Palmer and J.M. Wisehaupt of Ottumwa accompanied the body here from Kansas City on No. 26 the Southwest Limited, Sunday night. Services will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in the Lester Jay funeral home, conducted by the Rev. W.F. Holler of Brooklyn. Masons will have charge of the burial services in Memorial Lawn cemetery. They will be conducted by Walter Smith. Pallbearers will be A.L. Townes, C.W. Becker, Chester Gage, Clarence Phillips, Charles Overturf and William Fry. Honorary pallbearers will be J.M. Wisehaupt, T.H. Kemp, Frank McNamara, Jerry Shea, James Brown and Mike Reynolds.
