Albert E. Mann, 74, veteran retired Milwaukee railroad conductor, died Thursday at 3:40 p.m. at his home, 733 West Fourth street, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Mann, who retired from the Milwaukee in May, 1937 with 54 years of service, was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, May 1, 1865, the son of James and Malinda Mann. He entered Milwaukee service in April, 1883 at the age of 18. He first was employed on the Iowa division on what is known as the Calmar line. A few months later he was transferred to the Kansas City division, running between Marion and Ottumwa. This was during the time the terminal roundhouse was located near the John Morrell & Co. packing plant and prior to the construction of the line between Ottumwa and Kansas City. He moved here with his mother and father in 1904. He was promoted to conductor, September 18, 1891. Practically all his freight service was east and north of Ottumwa. During the last 15 years of his service he worked on passenger trains. Surviving are his sister. Miss Dora Bell Mann, and three cousins, Mrs. Orval VanHosen of Des Moines, Paul Barrus of Des Moines and Mrs. Jay Jacobs of Boone. His mother preceded him in death of July 5, 1929, 10 years and a day before her son's death. Services will be at the home Sunday at 3 p.m. conducted by the Rev. Earl Daniels, assisted by the Rev. R.W. Swick. Burial will be in the Ottumwa cemetery. Active pallbearers will be B.J. McGraw, M.L. McNerney, Perry Grubbs, J.W. LeBow, William Carnihan and J.L. Collings. Honorary pallbearers will be James N. Brown, D.G Higbee, D.A. McCarrow, Theodore Runzler, William Woodrow and C.W. Jordan.
