J.W. Johnson, 90, Dies Here Sunday

John W. Johnson, for over 80 years a resident of Wapello county, died Sunday at the age of 90 at the home of his son, Byron B. Johnston 305 North Sheridan avenue. Death came at 10:30 a.m. The son of Gustaf and Majastina Johnson, he was born in Vestergetland, Sweden, October 9, 1851. When he was six months old he was brought by his parents to this country, settling near Munterville. He worked as a registered druggist with the wholesale firm of J.L. Taylor & Co. in Ottumwa while he was a young man. After that he farmed for many years. He was proprietor of a general store in Munterville for 22 years. The past 14 year he has lived in Ottumwa with his son. He married Mary Gustason October 4, 1876, at Munterville. She preceded him in death in 1932. Surviving are a daughter Mrs. Myrtle Stevens, Hermit, California, seven sons, E.W. Johnson, Chester L., Edward S., Carl E., and Byron R. all of Ottumwa. Clarence S. of Munterville and Cyrus E. Johnson of Los Angeles. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Mary Kindblade of Munterville and 27 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The body is at the Johnson funeral chapel awaiting the completion of funeral arrangements.
Funeral services for John W. Johnson, who died Sunday at the home of his son, Byron B. Johnson 305 North Sheridan avenue, will be held from the Munterville Lutheran church at 2 p.m. Thursday. Mr. Johnson was a charter member of that church. The Rev. J.G. Swedberg will be in charge, assisted by the Rev. Malvin H. Lundeen of the First Lutheran church. Burial will be in the Munterville cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The casket will be taken from the Johnson's funeral chapel to the church at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
