M.G. Gruwell, Native Of County, Is Dead
M.G. Gruwell, 67, of 234 Richmond Avenue, died Tuesday at 4:45 p.m. at his home. The son of Benedict and Sarah Gruwell, he was born December 23, 1875 in Wapello county. He had lived in Ottumwa and in the county all his life. His wife Laura and a daughter Evelyn, preceded him in death. Surviving are two sons, Earl and Lon of Ottumwa; six grandchildren, Mrs. Dorothy Sample, Mrs. Viola King, Leo Gurwell, Mrs. Marie Brooks and Helen and Russell Gruwell, all of Ottumwa, and a great-granddaughter, Jacqueline Joy King of Ottumwa. Two brothers, Ed and Frank Gruwell of Ottumwa, and a sister, Mrs. Stella Bailey of Ottumwa, and three half-sisters, Mrs. Robert Croft and Mrs. Sam McFarland of Ottumwa and Mrs. Joe Coles of Chicago, also survive. He was a member of the Willard Street Methodist church. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. from the Johnson funeral chapel with the Rev. L.E. Welshons of the First Church of the Open Bible in charge. Burial will be in the Shaul cemetery. The casket will be taken to the residence at 4 p.m. today, and returned to the chapel at noon Friday. Pallbearers will be Russell, Leo and Carol Gruwell, George King, Glen Sample and Olen Brooks.
