Phillip Lennon Is Frist Soldier Death
Ottumwa Boy Succumbs At Chanute Field
Phillip Bernard Lennon, 19-year-old air corps private, died at Chanute field, Rantoul, Illinois, Thursday afternoon after an illness of two months. He is the first Ottumwa youth to die in the service under the national defense act. Son of Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Lennon of 619 Chester avenue he was born in Ottumwa September 17, 1921. He was educated at St. Patrick's parochial school and at Catholic Central high school, from which he was graduated in 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps at Chanute field in August 1940. Surviving are parents; sisters Mrs. Ed Brooks, Mary Alice, Kathleen and Patricia Lennon all of Ottumwa. (Obit cut off)

Services for Phillip Bernard Lennon, who died at Chanute Field hospital, Rantoul Illinois, Thursday, will be held Monday at 8:30 a.m. in the Vaughan funeral chapel and at 9 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic church, Requiem high mass will be celebrated by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. J.M. Walsh V.F. pastor. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. Comrades of the U.S. Army Air Corps at Chanute Field will act as pallbearers. Military services will be held at the grave. Members of General Shields No. 888, Knights of Columbus will meet at the lodge home, Third street, Sunday at 7:30 p.m. when they will go to the Vaughan chapel to recite the rosary at 8 p.m. The body was taken to the home of his father, J.P. Lennon, 619 Center avenue, today at 3:30 p.m. It will remain in the home until Sunday at 10 a.m. when it will be returned to the chapel to remain until the service.
