Elvira Christy Cloyd was born near Little Rock, Ark., October 8, 1824, and died August 19, 1914, at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. E. G. Schafer, 137 South Ransom Street, at the age of eighty nine years, ten months and eleven days.
In 1830 the deceased moved to Centerville, Ind., and in 1845 came to Linn County, Iowa where she was married November 23, 1830, to William Cloyd. In 1847 they moved to Wapello County and located on a homestead two and one-half miles east of Blakesburg where three children were born, viz: Cynthia A. Harlan, Ella M. Parker and Perry E. Cloyd. In 1858 she was converted and united with the Baptist Church and has been a lifelong member.
Grandma Cloyd, as she was familiarly known, called by all who knew her, suffered all the privileges of the early pioneers yet her happiness recollection were of the days when she crossed the Des Moines River at Green Street ford with an ox team headed for a log cabin home where she kept the spinning wheel going when not busy at household duties and was a helpmate in every since of the word. After the death of her husband, February 13, 1892 she with the children of her deceased daughter Ella moved to Blakesburg where she resided until December 15, 1909, at which time she came to Ottumwa to live with her granddaughter. Grandma Cloyd had been a patient sufferer for many years having been confined to her bed for almost five years and only those her knew her best know how well prepared she was to take the journey to that far country where she longed to go. The bible and old hymn books were to her a constant source of delight. Short services were conducted at the home Friday, August 21, and the remains were taken to the Baptist Church, Blakesburg, where funeral services were conducted by Rev. Jonathan Lee, text II, Timothy 4,6,7,8. Interment was made in the Blakesburg Cemetery.
Thus ends of the life oone who forgave and sought forgiveness never for a moment doubting the promise of her Saviour . “And I give upon them eternal life , and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my father’s hand.” Beautiful floral offerings showed expression of former love by her friends . She leaves numerous friends and relatives to mourn her demise.
Note: There is an error on her date of marriage. It states she was married in 1830 which would make her only 6 years old at the time of her marriage.
