Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” Monday, July 25, 1966, Page 11:

Thomas (Whitey) Swaney, 76, of 1578 N. Foster, died Sunday at 11:15 a.m. at Sunnyslope Extended Care Center. He had been ill for several years.

He was a retired custodian of the state fair grounds in Des Moines.

The son of James and Harriet Swaney, he was born Feb. 14, 1890, in Memphis, Mo. He was married in 1915 in Centerville to Zatha Bradshaw, who preceded him in death. He had lived in Ottumwa the past several years.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Floyd Buchanan of Ottumwa and Mrs. William Selix of Des Moines; three sisters, two brothers, five grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, three sisters, a brother and a daughter preceded him in death.

The service will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Jay Funeral Home with the Rev. John Groen of First Church of the Open Bible officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.
