August 1973Clay Harwood Dies At 85
Clay Harwood, 85, retired rural mail carrier, died at 2:10 a.m. today at St. Joseph Hospital in Ottumwa. He had been a patient there since Aug. 4.
Harwood was a lifetime resident of Jefferson County. Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Weston Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. Ellen Howse Deere officiating. Interment will be in Abingdon Cemetery.
Harwood was born June 21, 1888 at Libertyville, the son of Charles and Sarah Humphreys Harwood. He attended Highland Park College, Parsons College, Iowa Teachers College and Dental and Medical College, Kansas City, Mo.
He was a teacher in a number of schools, including Brookville; Polk No. 1, near Abingdon; Harper's Ferry; and Hickory Ridge near Batavia. He was a rural mail carrier out of the Fairfield Post Office from 1919 to 1949. He was a member of the Fairfield Presbyterian Church.
Harwood was married to Verna Cleo Walker Aug. 25, 1915. She died Nov. 24, 1940.
Surviving are the following children: Charles Harwood, Ankeny; Dale Harwood, Fairfield Route 1; Mrs. Dorothy Emanuel, Fairfield; Francis Edward Harwood, Fairfield; Mrs. Kathryn Stephenson, University City, Tex.; Mrs. Ruth Floyd, Fairfield; Mrs. Beverly Streed, LeClaire; and Mrs. Carolyn Farmer, Sun Valley, Calif.
Also surviving are 36 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sons, two sisters, one brother and four grandchildren.
