Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” February 16, 1961:
Carey Newman, 64, Ottumwa route 1, died at 5:05 a.m. today at the Ottumwa Hospital.
The son of Carey and Charlotte Sauer Newman, he was born in Wapello County Sept. 4, 1896. He was a resident of Wapello and Keokuk counties most of his life.
A veteran of World War I, he entered service Sept. 4, 1918, in Ottumwa and was discharged April 16, 1919, at Camp Dodge.
He was a member of Olive Branch Lodge No. 21, A.F.&A.M. at Agency, and the Arendt-Bowlin-Stubbs Post No. 83, American Legion, at Hedrick.
Surviving are one son, Rex E. Newman, Ottumwa; two grandchildren; three brothers, John A. Newman, Agency, Norris Newman, Fairfield, and Chester A. Newman, Hedrick; and two sisters, Mrs. Helen Sward, Farson, and Miss Nora M. Newman, Shelton, Wash.
One son, Warren, was killed in service in World War II. He was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
The body is at the Johnson Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services for Carey Newman, 64, of Ottumwa route 1, who died Thursday, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Johnson Funeral Chapel. Rev. Cecil Latta, pastor of the Willard Street Methodist Church will be in charge. Burial will be in the McCormick Cemetery at Highland Center where Masonic services will be in charge of Olive Branch Lodge No. 21 of Agency. Pallbearers will be Leslie Buchholz, Ernest Buchholz, Sevard Johnson, Jack Brain, Joe Giltner and Paul Whittington.
