L.M. CARPENTER EXPIRED TODAY

Was One of Pioneer Farmers of County
Came here in 1850 From Ohio

After failing gradually, but noticeably, for the past six months, Luther M. Carpenter passed away at 8:30 o'clock this morning at his home, 1231 North Court street. He was unconscious since yesterday afternoon. At his bedside were his wife and three of his four children, who did all in their power to cheer the closing hours of his fruitful life.

Mr. Carpenter's entire business life was spent in this county, where he was one of it's most prominent farmers. He was born in Licking county, Ohio in 1834, the son of the late Benjamin Carpenter. Mr. Carpenter removed with his parents to Iowa in 1850 and settled in Richland township on the large farm which still bears his name.

He was united in marriage to Margaret Walker, who with their four children, survive him. The children are, Dr. M.C. Carpenter of Fairfield, Walter Carpenter of the Hawaiian Islands, Mrs. Eva Gatlin and Mrs. R.T. Cameron, both of Ottumwa. Mr. Carpenter has always been actively associated with the affairs of the community and only retired from farming a few years ago, when he rented his home farm and moved to Ottumwa, residing since at the present home.

In politics Mr. Carpenter has always been a Republican. He has served at times on the school board of his township and has been a Mason for more than fifty years.

The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence. Rev. T.W. Jeffrey, pastor of the First M.E. church, of which Mr. Carpenter was a member, will have charge of the services. The details of the services have not yet been decided upon and it is probable that the Masons will assist in the obsequies. Interment will be in the Ottumwa cemetery.
