Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” October 28, 1918:

ENGINEER DIES TODAY

Martin Carroll, Milwaukee engineer died at 2:30 p.m. today following two weeks’ illness with Spanish influenza. His wife and three sons, Leonard, Edward and Michael, who survive him, were also quite ill with the dread disease which has made such inroads in Ottumwa and elsewhere throughout the country. Mrs. Carroll is much improved and the children are practically over the illness.

The parents of Mr. Carroll, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Carroll, one sister, Mrs. Clyde Jones, and one brother, Daniel, who is with the colors, also survive. The Carroll family was one of the first in the city to be stricken with influenza.

(Note: Martin is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Ottumwa.)
