Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” April 22, 1944:

Native Of County Dies Here At 86

William Mael, 86, a life-long resident of Wapello county and for many years an employe of the Harper-McIntire company, died at 5:15 a.m. today at his home at 522 Clinton avenue.

He was born June 23, 1857, in Wapello county, the son of John Morley and Elizabeth Moore Mael, and was married on January 2, 1884 in Jefferson county to Clara Jane Peterson, who survives him.

His father settled on a claim near Eldon he purchased from the government in 1843 and he is the last of his family. He is survived by his wife and two children, Jesse Harper Mael of Ottumwa, and Mrs. Charles Van Winkle of Aberdeen, S.D. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Mrs. Ralph Newell of Hedrick route 1, and William H. Monroe of Battle Ground, Wash., and one great-granddaughter, Miss Marjorie Monroe of Battle Ground, Wash., and several nieces and nephews.

The body is at the Johnson funeral chapel pending completion of funeral arrangements.

“MAEL SERVICES,” From “Ottumwa Courier,” April 24, 1944:

Funeral services for William Mael, who died at his home, 522 Clinton avenue, at 5:15 a.m. Saturday, will be held at the Johnson funeral chapel at 2 p.m. Tuesday, in charge of the Rev. E.Z. Kellum, pastor of the Free Methodist church. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery. Pallbearers will be Charles Mills, Carl D. Kuhn, Vern Louderback, David Newell and Harvey Landen.
