“In Memoriam,” From “Ottumwa Courier,” March 13, 1914:

Smith Manro Hanshaw, son of Smith and Mary Hanshaw, was born in Harrison county, Ohio, June 28, 1833, and died at his home near Eldon, Iowa, March 1, 1914, aged eighty years, eight months and three days. He received his education in the Ohio schools. On June 6, 1853 he was united in marriage to Mary Creighton, in Belmont County, Ohio.

They were the parents of nine children, all but three, Eliza J., Hiram U., and Levina L., surviving him.

In the year of 1854 Mr. Hanhaw removed to Iowa, first locating in Van Buren county, and later in Jefferson county, where he engaged in farming. In the year 1865 he moved to Wapello county, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and began the practice of law in the town of Ashland. Later he removed to Eldon where he was actively engaged in the practice of his profession many years and maintained an office until about three years ago. During his active practice at the bar, Mr. Hanshaw met with more than ordinary success. His ability and tireless energy won for him a large clientage, and he participated in the trial of many important cases in both the state and federal courts.

His first wife, Mary Creighton, passed from this world March 14, 1886; and on March 17, 1890, he again married, his second wife being Sarah Wiley-Baker of Eldon.

In 1890 Mr. Hanshaw moved on a farm a short distance northeast of Eldon, and resided there the rest of his life. For two years past he had suffered in health, and realized the approach of the time when he should resign his earthly activities, and had made every needful preparation for passing to the life beyond.

He is survived by his wife and six children as follows:

Mary E. Pierce, Springdale, Kansas; Sarah O. Sconce and Emily G. Fosdick, Ottumwa; Harriet A. Hinkle of Laddsdale, and Thomas C. and William R. Hanshaw of Eldon, Iowa and one step-son Charles H. Baker of Ottumwa, beside a large number of grand children and great-grandchildren, as well as a host of friends who will miss him and sympathize with his family. The funeral services were held at the Money church, Tuesday, March 3, at one o’clock p.m. and interment made in the cemetery adjoining the church.–Contributed.

(Transcriber’s Note - Smith Manro Hanshaw is buried in the Bethlehem Cemetery in Davis County, Iowa.)
