Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” November 27, 1917:

IOWA PIONEER DIES IN DENVER

J.A. ISRAEL’S REMAINS BROUGHT TO OLD HOME AT ASHLAND FOR INTERMENT.

Death claimed a former Iowa and Wapello county pioneer when J.A. Israel died at his home in Denver Saturday, November 17.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon from the residence of his brother George P. Israel, the old Israel homestead near Old Ashland, conducted by Rev. Jonathan Lee of Ottumwa. The service was attended by many friends and relatives from Ottumwa and nearby places.

The death of Mr. Israel, known to his old friends as Andrew, marks the removal of one of the prominent men of his generation. Reared on a Wapello county farm and educated in Iowa schools, his career was marked by usefulness in the communities where his lot was cast. He was a representative from Wapello county in the Iowa legislature at an early day and after going to Colorado was for a number of years active in politics in that state.

Mr. Israel is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. T.F. McGrew of Denver, three brothers, Robert T., Hiram J., and George P. Israel, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Nicholson, all of Ashland.
