OBITUARY.

Hadassah J. Cotton was born May 19, 1825 on Island Creek, near Steubenville, Ohio. About 1840 her parents moved to Athens County, O. She attended the Athens Female Seminary and for two years thereafter was a teacher. At the age of 10 she was converted and joined the Methodist Protestant church. In 1847 she was united in marriage with Rev. George M. Scott, a minister in the Muskingum conference of that church. From 1862 to 1865 she was the sole guardian of the family, her husband serving his country as chaplain of the 96th regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. In 1865 Rev. and Mrs. Scott moved to Iowa and joined the Iowa conference which they served on various charges until the fall of 1893 when they retired from regular itinerant work, their last charge being Mt. Zion circuit lying south and west of Ottumwa. In 1894 they moved to Ottumwa and resided here until death.
Rev. Scott was supernumerary assistant to the pastor, and for a few months, regular supply of the Methodist Protestant church of Ottumwa, Mrs. Scott continuing to be a capable, and efficient aid to her husband in all pastoral and church work. After the merging of the local Methodist Protestant and Plymouth Congregational churches, Mrs. Scott united with the latter church and was an active member of the Woman's Association of the church until stricken by illness about four and one-half years ago. Death ended her sufferings on Saturday evening Jan. 7, 1911, at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 18 days. The funeral was held from the late residence, 220 South Ransom Street, January 10, 1911, conducted by Rev. C. J. Nutt, president of the Iowa conference, Methodist Protestant church, assisted by Rev. D. C. Smith of the H. K. Kirkpatrick et al to T. W. R.
