Heat Blamed For Veteran’s Death
Dr. W. E. Sloat, 94, Fought In Many Battles During Civil War.
Ravages of the current heat wave cut into Ottumwa’s slim list of surviving Civil War veterans Saturday afternoon, when Dr. William E. Sloat, 94, died at 3:30 o'clock at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Moffit, 310 S. Ransom St., after a brief illness,. Dr. Sloat entered the Union forces in 1861 and was a volunteer in the seventh Wisconsin Regiment company F, Iron Brigade, Army of the Potomac. He was in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg and other engagements. At the battle of Cold Harbor, he was wounded severely and was honorably discharged after 37 months of service. He was born March 7, 1842 and Ossining, New York, the only child of William and Elizabeth Sloat. His father preceded him in death when he was young. At the age of 12 he and his mother moved to Wisconsin. He married Charlotte Kirk in Huntington, West Virginia in 1874. She preceded him in death. He was graduated from Brooklyn medical college in 1873 and practiced medicine in Mount Hope, Wisconsin until 1885 when he moved to Denmark. Until a few months ago he lived there. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. J. H. Moffit of Ottumwa, Mrs. Harry A. Shephard of Denmark and Mrs. Forrest E. Murphy of Burlington; four sons, William E. of Chicago, J. E. of Alton, Illinois, Charles of Washington and Edwin K. of Fort Madison and eight grandchildren. He was an honorary member of the Lee County medical Association and a member of the Episcopal Church. The body was taken to Denmark where funeral services were held at the Congressional church there.
