John. E. Hull, Prominent Citizen 47 Years, Dies
John E. Hull, 71, head of the J. E. Hull insurance agency, 209 East 2nd St., and president of the People's Building and Saving Association, 116 East. 3rd St., died at his home, 417 N. Sheridan Ave., Sunday at 8:20 AM. Mr. Hull for many weeks seriously ill, was a former City Councilman, Democratic County Chairman member and president of the school board and 32nd degree Mason. He was the son of Wesley and Mary Hull and was born at Chillicothe July 9, 1865, two years after he married Tina Smithburg in Blakesburg where he moved when young. Prior to coming here, he taught rural school for 14 terms in Blakesburg. In 1893, he established an insurance office on the south side and had been writing insurance here since that time. He was an alderman from the seventh ward from 1899 to 1901. He served as a school board member here from 1902 to 1913, being president from 1912 to 1913. For the last 27 years he had been president the People's Building and Savings Association. He was a member of the Ottumwa Lodge, No. 129, I. O. O. F.; Enterprise Rebekah, No. 132; the Elks, the Knights of the Pythias; Ottumwa Lodge, No. 16, A. F. & A. M.; Ottumwa chapter, No. 9, R. A. M.; Ottumwa Council, No. 31 R. & S. M.; Knights of Templar; Consistory of Des Moines; Kaaba Shrine, Davenport; Royal Arcanium; O. E. S., and White Shrine. He was also a member of the Ottumwa Kiwanis club. Surviving are his wife, Tena two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Byers of Batavia and Mary E. Hull at home; and one son John W. of Des Moines; one brother, Dr. J. H. Hull of Munden, Kansas; five grandchildren, and two great grandsons. His parents, three brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 PM at the First Methodist Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Harold Lancaster, D. D. Assisted by the Rev. Eugene C. Beach. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery. Masonic services, with a Knight Templar escort, will be held at the grave. The body will be taken to the church of 11 AM. Tuesday where it will remain until time for the services. Pallbearers, all members of the local Odd Fellows Lodge, will be M. F. Chisman, M. W. Poling, C. D. Evans, T. W. Chance, Elmer Ecton and Mabry Fisher.
