C. E. Johnson of Agency, First Wapello County Farm Bureau President, Dies
A Wapello County farmer nearly his entire lifetime and the first president of the Wapello County Farm Bureau, Charlie E. Johnson, 71, died Friday at his home in Agency. It was in January, 1917, that Mr. Johnson took office as president of the then newly – organized Wapello County Farm Bureau. Since that time he has been an active worker in the organization. Mr. Johnson was one of the 18 County Farm Bureau members in the state that helped organize the Iowa State Farm Bureau Federation at a special meeting in the winter of 1918. He was born November 5, 1864 in Agency, the son of Elijah and Percilia Johnson. He farmed in and around Agency all of his life, living the last 18 years in town. He was married to Mary Connelly at Agency November 7, 1889. He was a member of the Agency Methodist Episcopal Church and the Olive Lodge, No 21, A. F. & A. M. Surviving are his wife Mary; two daughters, Mrs. Veda Bohlender of Guthrie Center and Mrs. Hazel Truitt of Ottumwa; and one son, Ronald E. of Agency, chairman of the soil conservation and domestic allotment committee of the County; and one sister, Mrs. Ida Mathes of Agency; one brother, Dan of Agency; 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:30 PM at the Agency Methodist Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. J. H. Krenmyre of Montezuma. Burial be made in the Agency cemetery. The body will take be taken from the Lester Jay funeral home Sunday morning to the Johnson home.
