NORA J. SHOEMAKER

Mrs. Nora J. Shoemaker was born August 13, 1864, near Douds Station Van Buren county, Iowa, and died Feb. 17, 1942, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Carl Dalin, of Ottumwa, Iowa, having lived 77 years, 6 months and 4 days.

She was on of nine children born to Julius L. and Emaline Carson Clark. When but eighteen months of age she moved with her parents to a farm near Libertyville, Jefferson county where she grew to womanhood. She obtained her education in the Old Eagle District school and at Birmingham academy, Van Buren county, Iowa. Nora was an apt and an outstanding student, and soon received a certificate to teach and for several years taught in the district school in her home vicinity as well as near Durango, Colo. She also attended Normal Schools in Fairfield.

She had a pleasing personality. Her kind, helpful disposition and strong Christian character won her many lasting friends.

On Nov. 1st, 1888 in her parent's old farm home, about fifty or more friends witnessed her marriage to Wm. S. Shoemaker, who at that time was postmaster in Batavia, Iowa. The young couple moved at once to their home in Batavia where they lived for several years, becoming the proud parents of three daughters and two sons.

In 1908 the family moved to Ottumwa, Iowa, where she made her home ever since. Mr. Shiemaker (sic: Shoemaker) passed away Feb., 1921, after a short illness.

She dearly loved her home and children as was evidenced evidenced by her never ceasing devotion to them until her sudden death.

She leaves to mourn her death one sister, Mrs. Mary R. Smith of Yakima, Wash., and one brother, Manford Clark of Wichita, Kansas; five children, who are Mrs. Veva Dalin of Ottumwa, Mrs. Ava Hartman of Fairfield, Glen Shoemaker of Omaha, Neb., Mrs. Wilda Young of Oklahoma City, Okla., Waldo Shoemaker of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Lester Jay Funeral Home in Ottumwa, at 2 p.m. Feb. 19, Dr. Herbert a Keck, pastor of the First Methodist church of Ottumwa officiated.

She was laid to rest beside her husband in the Ottumwa cemetery to await the great resurrection morn.
