Mrs. Bertha D. Bales

Mrs. Bertha D. Bales, 95, a resident of Jefferson Square Manor, died at the Manor Friday, Dec. 31, at 8:30 p.m following a long illness.

She was born May 11, 1876, in Van Buren County, the daughter of James and Rebecca Oldaker Barker. She had been a resident of Ottumwa for over 50 years. She was a member of the Finley Avenue Baptist Church.

She was first married to James Rosenbalm, who died in 1897. On Dec. 2, 1903, she married Ova H. Bales, in Bloomfield. He died in 1953.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Leota Plowman of Ottumwa; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one son, one daughter, three sisters, and two brothers.

The service was held Tuesday, Jan. 4, at 1:30 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Robert Beeler, of the Finley Avenue Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
